20 groups benefit from 50th Anniversary grant funding

The grants ranged from £100 to £500, and have been awarded for community events, concerts, picnic benches and much more.

Cllr Michael Mullaney, Executive Member for the Voluntary Sector, said: “I am delighted that we have been able to award our full allocation of grant funding to celebrate the Borough Council’s 50th anniversary.

“These grants continue our work supporting the borough’s charity and voluntary sectors. Thank you to all groups that applied, and as ever, thanks for your continued hard work in our communities.”

Below is a full list of the groups who received grants and what they were/will be used for. 

• Hinckley Town Tennis Club – commemorative bench
• Rotary Club of Market Bosworth – two picnic benches for the newly refurbished children’s play area in Market Bosworth Country Park
• Groby Sings – two community choir concerts plus a community event to celebrate both the 21st season of Groby Sings and HBBC’s 50th anniversary
• Kirkby Mallory Schoolroom – wheelchair accessible recycled plastic picnic table
• Markfield Community Association – community event to celebrate the volunteers and organisations who have supported community projects in Markfield over the years. Leading up to this event, there will also be an Arts and Crafts Challenge for members of the arts and crafts club to create a mural or other banner celebrating the Council’s 50th anniversary. The winner will be unveiled at the event and displayed at a local venue for residents to see
• St Francis Community Centre, Hinckley – two wildflower planters to flank the entrance to the centre
• Witherley Memorial Playing Field Trust – commemorative bench
• Higham Way Baptist Church, Burbage – commemorative bench and wildflower garden
• 1st Hinckley Explorer (Scout) Unit – community event. A working weekend camp revamping the campfire circle at Fox Coverts, Kirkby Mallory. This will include works on the campfire area all weekend, a 50th celebration on Saturday night and a plaque to commemorate the works in the Council's name
• Market Bosworth Bowling Club – picnic table (recycled resin) and parasol
• Hinckley Bowling Club – commemorative bench plus solar lighting to make the pathway to bench safe
• St Catherine’s Church, Burbage – community event. An eco tea party with creation of wildflower area and planting of fruit trees
• 2nd Groby Rainbows and Brownies – community event. Parties for Brownies and Rainbows plus replenishing craft supplies
• St Andrew’s Community Hub, Carlton – community lunch
• Markfield Community Library – restoration of existing commemorative bench with new commemorative plaque
• Elizabeth Woodville School Association, Groby – metal shed to store equipment for School Association charitable events with commemorative plaque
• George Ward Centre, Barwell – swing for their community garden plus a planter with commemorative plaque
• Sheepy Recreation Ground – native UK wildflowers to be planted in The Glade by Sheepy playing fields
• Twycross Village Hall – commemorative picnic bench with easy access and back support for elderly users
• Community Pet Food Bank, Hinckley – towards the purchase of a delivery van
