They are part of the European Endangered Species Programme.

A new male vicuña, which is the smallest member of the camel family, has arrived at Twycross Zoo.

There's already two female vicuñas at the zoo and this male has joined them as part of The European Association of Zoos and Aquaria (EAZA) Ex Situ Programme (EEP).

The programme scientifically manages vicuña to make sure there is a genetically and demographically healthy population.

Vicuñas are part of the European Endangered Species Programme as they were hunted almost to extinction for their wool and meat.

In the 1960s Chile and Peru created protected national parks and stopped trade in vicuña wool and since then, the population has steadily increased.
