An investigation has been launched after what's believed to be a bag of bones were pulled out of the River Soar just outside Loughborough.

It's understood they were found by a magnet fisher on a stretch of the river by the Stanford viaduct, in Meadow Lane on Saturday night.

Police say they are being tested to determine whether they are human.

A team of police divers carried out a search of the broader area.

A Leicestershire police spokesperson said: "Shortly after 6.15pm on Saturday 14th June we were called after a man who was magnet fishing close to Meadow Lane, Loughborough, pulled to the surface a bag believed to contain a number of bones.

Officers attended and the area was cordoned off while enquiries commenced at the scene. Police divers have searched the water in and around the area the bag was discovered. Those searches have now been completed.

Enquiries are continuing to determine for certain if the bones are human and if so, further test will then need to be carried out to establish how old they are."
