Leicestershire County Council has issued a statement stating that Barwell's recycling centre is closed due to a safety incident on site.

Leicestershire County Council has confirmed that the Barwell recycling centre has been closed because of a fire in a compactor unit.

A spokesperson said: “Firefighters promptly attended and extinguished the fire, which is believed to have been caused by a discarded household battery.

“We encourage residents not to dispose of batteries in their household waste as they have caused fires in waste collection vehicles and at waste sites previously.

“The site will remain closed today (Weds) while we assess the damage caused and ensure it is safe to re-open."

The announcement was made on Twitter on 7th June 2022 that the site had been closed because of a safety incident.

They aim to reopen the waste site on Saturday morning.
