One parent witnessed a child nearly get hit by a car whilst walking to school.

A petition has been started to install a permanent crossing in London Road, Hinckley.

This is to make crossing the road safer for children who go to Saint Peter's Catholic Primary School.

One parent said: "I witnessed a serious near-miss with one of the children crossing the road, if it hadn't been for his parents he would most certainly have been hit by a vehicle."

Another parent said: "Every day is a day where pupils and parents are exposed to the dangers of the unsafe crossing."

Saint Peter's Catholic Primary School used to have a crossing patrol person to help the children cross safely however, although advertising for the role no one has come forward.

Headteacher Luisa Rinaldi-Oxley said: "My argument has always been that if there is a risk assessed that we need someone to help children cross the road and we cannot fill that place then what is going to be done in its place because for me safeguarding is everyone's duty.

"I don't want children and families not feeling safe coming to school. That's the whole point of school that they feel safe and valued."

The leader of Hinckley and Bosworth Borough Council Stuart Bray started the petition on the Leicestershire County Council website.

Cllr Bray said: "Parents have reported several near misses at the school and are deeply concerned about child safety. Despite repeated requests for the crossing from local councillors, parents and even the children themselves the County Council has so far failed to act."

A Leicestershire County Council spokesman said: “We are aware of the petition and will review and investigate as we do with all petitions once it has been formally submitted after the closing date.”
