A number of local events were cancelled and a tree blocked a major route into Hinckley Town Centre as Storm Hannah swept through the Midlands.

The tree which fell between Trafford Road and Island Close in Hinckley blocked traffic in both directions on Leicester Road as council workers and firefighters worked to remove it.

The incident caused traffic queues in the area.

Hinckley's annual St George's Day Celebrations were also cancelled because of the bad weather forecast.

Hinckley and Bosworth Borough Council said on Friday:

"Due to predicted high winds ‘Storm Hannah’ and poor weather on Saturday 27 April, the decision has been taken to cancel the St George's Day Family Celebration events. However currently the Parade is still planned to go ahead and will leave St Mary's playground at 1.15pm and head up Castle Street towards St Peter's Church. We would recommend checking our social media for updates. All welcome to come and support."

The forecast of stormy conditions also led to Nuneaton's market being cancelled on Saturday 24th April.

Jonathan White, Head of Town Centres and Marketing said:

“We are disappointed to have to cancel the market tomorrow but, as always, safety has to come first – we simply can’t risk stalls being blown over or staff, traders or members of the public being injured.

Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council said wind gusts of around 44mph far exceed the tolerance of the market stalls so trading would be limited to those traders selling from vehicles.
