Five youths arrested yesterday Saturday 12 August after the car they were in collided with another vehicle have been released from police custody pending further investigation.

The incident took place just after 2pm on Launde Road, when a Silver Mondeo collided with a blue Hyundai i10.

The 69-year-old driver of the Hyundai was taken to Nottingham’s Queen’s Medical Centre for treatment. He remains in hospital where his condition is described as stable. A man and a woman sustained minor injuries and were taken to the Leicester Royal Infirmary. Another passenger in the car was uninjured.

The occupants of the Mondeo fled from the car but were detained nearby after a brief foot chase by officers.

Three 16-year-old youths and two boys, 14, were arrested on suspicion of aggravated vehicle theft.

The diversion put in place to allow for an investigation of the scene around Launde Road at the junction of Countryman Way and Ratby Lane has since been removed.

News imageIn the early hours of Saturday 12 August the Mondeo was seen at a petrol station in London Road in Coalville, where an incident of non-payment of fuel was reported to police. Hours later a member of the public reported the occupants of a Silver Mondeo acting suspiciously in the Main Street area of Peckleton.

Police responding to a further sighting of the Mondeo yesterday afternoon, spotted the vehicle in Ratby Lane and successfully deployed a tyre deflation device. They continued to follow the vehicle as they attempted to bring it to a safe stop.

The car continued for a short distance before it collided with the Hyundai.

Officers are still appealing to anyone who saw the Silver Mondeo being driven beforehand or the collision itself.

If you have any information that could assist officers with their investigation of this incident you are urged to call 101 and quote incident 379 of August 12.

In line with standard procedures a referral was made to the IPCC following the incident.
