Three teens sentenced after boy was stabbed in Bedworth

Tyree Lieng, 18, of Thorntons Way, Nuneaton was sentenced to two-and-a-half years in a young offenders’ institute and Snowden Mayanika, 19, of Conifer Rise, Northampton was sentenced to three years in a young offender’s institute.

A 17-year-old boy from Coventry who can’t be named for legal reasons was given a 12-month youth referral order.

Violence broke out in the car park of a working men’s club in Bedworth following a boxing tournament on the 9th of April.

It started when Lieng punched the 17-year-old in the back of the head and the disorder progressed to them both producing machetes.

Mayanika became involved, pulling out a knife and stabbing the boy in the stomach.

A security officer at the venue intervened to break up the disorder and disarmed the 17-year-old.

Detective Constable Alexander De Burca from Warwickshire Police CID said: “This was a violent incident in a residential area that caused shock in the local community.

“A boy suffered a very serious stab wound that could have been so much worse; this could quite easily have been a murder investigation. It once again highlights the dangers of carrying a knife.

The boy was taken to hospital with serious injuries to his stomach. He has now made a full recovery.

Lieng suffered an injury to his hand in the incident.

Detective Constable Alexander De Burca from Warwickshire Police CID said: “I would like to pay tribute to the security guard who bravely intervened to pull the group apart and disarm one of the males. Following this two of them fled the scene and fortunately, nobody else was hurt.

“Acts of violence such as this will not be tolerated. We remain committed to tackling violent crime and putting offenders behind bars.”

Lieng pleaded guilty to threatening with a knife and violent disorder.

Mayanika pleaded guilty to wounding with intent and possession of a knife.

The 17-year-old pleaded guilty to violent disorder and making threats with a knife.
