"The donations will help to create memories that will last a lifetime."

Local charity Rainbows is asking people in the East Midlands to donate the cost of an Easter egg rather than the chocolate this year.

Around 80 per cent of children and young people who are supported by the charity are unable to eat Easter eggs because of the complex medical conditions they have.

This is due to Dysphagia which is the medical term for difficulty swallowing. Those with Dysphagia will often be tube fed through a nasogastric tube or gastrostomy straight into their stomach, meaning treats such as chocolate are not suitable.

To combat this they've created a virtual Easter basket which people can fill with donations and personalised messages.

Nishil Saujani, Acting Director of Supporter Relations at Rainbows, said: “Sadly treats such as chocolate are not suitable for most of the children and young people that access Rainbows.

“But, we really appreciate that you’ll want to show your wonderful support; so instead of donating a chocolate egg, we’re asking you to donate the cost of an Easter egg. Chocolate will be devoured in five minutes flat, but the memories created from your generous donations this Easter, can last a lifetime.”

  • A virtual egg donation of £5 could fund a Play Team to provide arts and crafts fun and learning
  • £10 could pay towards the care of a baby, child or young person being looked after by staff at Rainbows.
  • A £20 donation could pay towards the care of a family member who has been recently bereaved.
