Assistant Chief Constable issues statement following 'serious incidents' in Nuneaton

This includes reports of sexual attacks on women, robberies and violent disorders.

ACC Smith said: “The last two weeks have seen an unprecedented level of demand across Warwickshire. To put this in some context, the demand experienced on Monday was higher than New Year’s Eve, and daily demand remains above levels previously experienced.

“It has not just been the level of demand but also the seriousness and complexity of many of the offences officers have responded to.

“It has been particularly concerning to see a number of reports of serious sexual assaults on women. While these types of incidents are rare, when they happen they are particularly traumatic for the victims and understandably cause a great deal of concern in the local community. Tackling violence, abuse and intimidation against women and girls is a national priority and a priority for the force, and I urge the local community to join us in challenging this type of behaviour in all its forms. We will continue to work with our partners to bring offenders to justice while proactively working to prevent offending.

“While events in Nuneaton in the past couple of weeks have caused a great deal of concern locally, the community can be reassured by the promptness of the police response to these incidents with suspects being quickly identified and detained.

“At a time of unprecedented demand, we continue to deliver effective policing services across the county, flexing our resources as required. Although challenging, we can reassure our communities that we remain ready and able to meet the needs of our communities through what will be a very busy summer period.”
