The action came after complaints from cemetery users.
Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council has begun a programme of work to improve the management of cemeteries by removing embellishments left on graves.
After a period of consultation and engagement earlier this year, the council agreed Cemetery Regulations which make clear what is and allowed to be placed on graves across all five cemeteries managed by the Borough Council.
The action came after complaints from cemetery users about what they felt was excessive and anti social action taken by other users.
The result now is that letters are being sent to plot holders at Marston Lane Cemetery, asking them to take action to improve the grave space for which they are responsible, ensuring it complies with the new Regulations.
Council staff will take into account the feedback received from this initial action before continuing the action at other Cemeteries.
Councillor Cllr Julian Gutteridge, portfolio holder for health and environment at Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council, explained:
“It is our duty to maintain the cemeteries for everyone to use and so that we can all pay tribute to those who are commemorated there.
“Cemetery users gave us clear feedback that we needed to tighten up our regulations and take action against the minority of people whose actions are spoiling use of the Cemetery for others.
“We recognise this is a very sensitive subject for many people who quite understandably want to mourn and remember their loved ones. But we hope people will see that the steps we have prepared are for the good of all users.”
If action to improve the graves is not taken by plot holders, then the Regulations ensure that council staff have the power to take down temporary embellishments of grave spaces.
Added Councillor Gutteridge:
“We intend to take this step by step, and attempt to support people through changes they might find difficult by being clear about what we expect from all Cemetery users. But we will take the necessary action to improve our Cemeteries, should we need to.”
