College students organise fun-filled day to combine coursework and fitness!

Sports students from North Warwickshire and Hinckley College joined with students from Oakwood SEN School last week to take part in a one-off football tournament.

Arranged solely by the level 2 and 3 BTEC students and delivered as part of their ‘Organising an Event’ module, the learners used their own initiative to organise the tournament which saw a total of 90 students gather together in a fun-filled morning of competition and comradery.

Prior to the event, the students also held a range of activities including a tombola, raffle and cake sale where they raised a fantastic £160 in order to purchase supplies for the event.

Cllr Ian Lloyd, portfolio holder for Arts and Leisure said:

“It is great to see the students taking the initiative to organise this event. What a wonderful idea to combine, fun, fitness and management skills in a competition which sees two sets of students come together and take part in this tournament. What a great example to others, well done to all of those involved.”

Amy and George, Level 3 College students helping to coordinate the event said:

“The day has run really smoothly despite a last minute change of tournament format at the start! We adapted the games and teams so that everyone was involved, we’ve really enjoyed our course at the college and loved working with the Oakwood students to make this morning as fun and inclusive as possible!”

Nick Wilson, Facility Manager for Nuneaton Harriers said:

“It’s great to see these two groups of young people working together and gaining more practical skills that they can take with them into whatever path they chose next, whether that be University, apprenticeships or work. It’s clear to see that everyone is having fun and has had a great morning in the beautiful sunshine, which is brilliant! Well done to all involved in organising a thoroughly enjoyable event!”
