Consultation launched on plans to improve Rugby Road and Hinckley town centre

Views sort on proposals to upgrade key junctions on Rugby Road, and highway improvements to cycling and pedestrian routes

Launched by Leicestershire County Council, the consultation which runs from 21 October to midnight on 18 November, is available to complete online at www.leicestershire.gov.uk/HinckleyZ4-consultation  

Proposals include plans to improve both the Hawley Road and Brookside junctions. There are also plans to improve safety for pedestrian and cyclists in the Granville Road, Spa Lane/London Road and Coventry Road areas, introduce new traffic signals, signage, and a review of resident and town centre parking facilities.

Rugby Road is a key route in Hinckley and it’s important we continue to invest in our transport network as the borough grows, with new homes, jobs and communities. 

These proposals aim to improve sustainable transport options in and out of the town with quicker and more reliable journeys, and also encourage walking and cycling where possible. The consultation is an opportunity to engage with us on the proposals and have your say.

The £5m scheme, aims to maximise the borough's economic potential by reducing congestion and shortening journey times. It also aims to  improve air quality by encouraging more people to walk and cycle. 

Cllr David Bill, Deputy Leader and Executive Lead for Planning, Hinckley & Bosworth Borough Council said: “The Rugby Road/Westfield Road/Hawley Road junction is one of the busiest in the town.  The previous alterations proved to be very controversial.  I very much hope that this time people who have to use this junction will engage in the process so that every effort is made to get it right this time.”  

The scheme is being funded with £3.5m from the Government’s National Productivity Investment Fund (NPIF), a funding pot which aims to provide upgrades to essential local roads. The remaining £1.5m will be provided by the County Council and third party contributions.
