As a mark of respect, the Borough Flag at the Town Hall will fly at half-mast on the day of her funeral.

The former Mayor Diana Hawkes, the first person to become an Alderwoman in Nuneaton and Bedworth, has died.

Alderwoman Hawkes, who was Borough Mayor in 2001/02, was a Labour councillor serving on Nuneaton and Bedworth Council for more than a quarter of a century.

She was the first person to be both Mayor, in 2001/02, as well as Mayoress, when her late husband was Mayor.

During her term as Mayor, her nominated charity was the County Air Ambulance and the civic appeal raised £32,000.

She leaves a son Adam, and son-in-law Glen.

Cllr Kris Wilson, Leader of Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council paid tribute to Alderwoman Hawkes, he said: “Di first became a councillor in 1986 and served for more than 26 years - a substantial commitment. Both her and her husband, Brian, loved the community of Bedworth.

“They were each other's rock, side by side, and they were a formidable force. The Borough mourns the loss of a dedicated servant of our community.

“The one thing I also think that should not be forgotten is that she also served on the bench of the magistrates' service, dispensing justice and trying to do right.

“She was a lifelong supporter for the air ambulance and raised thousands during her time as mayor."

As a mark of respect, the Borough Flag at the Town Hall will fly at half-mast on the day of her funeral, the date of which has yet to be announced.
