Group praised for 'making difference'

Dementia Action Week starts on 20 May

A Leicestershire woman, whose husband has Alzheimer’s, has praised a dementia support group for ‘making a difference’ to their lives.

The Forget me Not group, which was set up with the help of our local area coordinators, offers support and advice to people living with dementia and their carers, helping them adapt to living with the condition.

The group is run by volunteers twice a month, once in Newbold Verdon and once in Desford.

Sue Dixon, 72, from Newbold, has been going to the group for a year with her husband Bob, 75, who was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in 2010.

Sue, a former swimming instructor, said: “I’m so glad that we saw the group advertised in our local magazine. We were made to feel very welcome and we have benefited so much from it. Everyone here is in a similar situation to us. I don’t feel quite so alone now.”

The group, which is funded via grants and donations, hosts a range of activities as well as organises day trips for those living with dementia and their carers.

The grandmother-of-three said: “It is great do things we wouldn’t necessarily do and meet people of all age groups. Not many people realise that Alzheimer’s can affect people of all ages.”

Now Sue is encouraging others to join groups or attend events across the county as part of Dementia Action Week (20-26 May). 

The national week, which is supported by the Alzheimer’s Society, will see volunteers and organisations host a number of local events for people with dementia, carers and professionals. 

She said: “If someone is in a similar situation, they should definitely give it a try. It has made a difference to us.”

“It is fantastic to see groups across the county such as Forget me Not giving people in similar situations a chance to meet and take part in activities and trips. 

“Doing this not only helps those that take part, but also raises awareness of the condition.
