A community staff nurse at Leicestershire Partnership NHS Trust has been awarded a Cavell Star Award for her exceptional care to local patients.

The Cavell Award is a prestigious national award which recognises outstanding commitment and dedication in nursing staff across the country.

Rita Kirkby was nominated for the Cavell Star Award by Victoria Jewell.

Victoria Jewell, a community staff nurse, said: “I am delighted in presenting this Cavell Star Award to Rita Kirkby. Rita is a passionate community staff nurse and is well known by our local GP services, specialist nurses and has a world of knowledge.

“Rita shows exceptional care to all our local patients, has given lots of extra hours to nursing, to support patients who are coming to their last days of life. She offers a shoulder to cry on, a listening ear and support for patients who need urgent care.

“Not only does Rita do an amazing job at being there for our patients, but she also supports our staff too. As a community nurse with many years of experience and now working within our Hub, Rita often offers a guiding hand to many newly qualified nurses, health care assistants and students.

“As a team, we feel so lucky in having Rita for bringing such calm and strength to the team.

“Personally, and on behalf of LPT, I would like to thank Rita for all her years of service. We are so grateful for such a kind, friendly and supportive person amongst our team. She demonstrates a positive attitude, dedication, and resilience within her role, all with a smile on her face.

“Congratulations Rita, here’s to many more happy and healthy years within nursing.”
