Charnwood Borough Council has announced that Loughborough Market is suspended due to the COVID-19 outbreak.
The market in Loughborough had been running with food stalls only in accordance with the Government's social distancing policy.
On Thursday 26th March the market was substantially reduced with only eight stalls, selling food, able to trade.
Charnwood Borough Council said: "We would like to thank traders and customers who attended the market for observing the social distancing guidance and there were no issues. However, we feel that to further support the Government Stay At Home message it is appropriate to postpone the markets until further notice."
Loughborough Markets are celebrating 800 years of trading in 2020.
Loughborough retail market is usually held every Thursday and Saturday in the Market Place from 8am to 4pm.
Charnwood Borough Council said it will bring the market back as soon possible.
A spokesperson said "We look forward to seeing traders and shoppers back in the town centre in the future. The health and safety of everyone in Charnwood is our paramount concern."
