Museums, smaller libraries close across Leicestershire

Council says public safety is priority.

Leicestershire’s museums and most smaller libraries are now closed as part of county council measures to prioritise public safety during the coronavirus outbreak.

The council leader Nick Rushton has urged residents to follow Government advice to help stop the spread and said that the council’s priority is keeping critical services running.

Notable Leicestershire landmarks such as Bosworth Battlefield Heritage Centre and the Century Theatre are now closed until further notice.

Library services will be concentrated on the main centres at Loughborough, Hinckley, Market Harborough, Coalville, Oadby, Wigston Magna and Melton Mowbray, with the situation kept under regular review.

Events, activities, adult learning classes and clubs due to take place in all libraries have been cancelled until further notice. Items currently out on loan will not be due for return until 1 May 2020.

Leader of Leicestershire County Council, Nick Rushton has said:

“These are unprecedented times. I understand residents may be feeling unsettled but it’s important people heed the national advice. 

"Life will be different for many weeks and months, which will bring challenges, but the national plans are designed to slow the spread so that lives can be saved.

"We are taking the necessary immediate and longer-term steps to support and protect residents, staff and partners.

"Our focus is keeping critical services running, particularly those supporting vulnerable people such as our children’s and adults’ services, coroners, urgent road repairs, waste disposal and public health."
