Residents can now give their views on the plans for a £1.2m scheme to improve Shepshed town centre.

Charnwood Borough Council has worked closely with the Shepshed Town Team, with support from Shepshed Town Council on the public realm improvement scheme.

More details about the scheme, which covers improvements in Market Place, Bull Ring, Hall Croft and Field Street have been revealed and residents are being invited to give their feedback.

The project would see a range of improvements in Market Place to create a distinctive gateway into the town centre. The scheme also looks to increase the amount of public space to allow special events to be held in the area.

There would also be wider footpaths next to shops, additional street furniture, improved landscaping and increased provision for cycle parking in the town centre.

The attractiveness and local identity of the town will also be enhanced with a range of landscaping improvements around the Bull Ring, Hall Croft and Field Street.

Councillor Jonathan Morgan, lead member for regeneration said: "This scheme is a great opportunity to generate an increase of footfall for local businesses in Shepshed while making improvements to the public space will make the town centre more appealing to visits.

"We have continued to work closely with the Town Team and Town Council on these detailed plans and we’re now pleased to share them with the wider community.

"The coronavirus pandemic has been a difficult time for local businesses and this scheme will play an important role in the town’s recovery. I’d encourage residents and business owners to take a look at the suggested improvements and provide feedback through the online consultation."

Residents, businesses and visitors to the town centre are being invited to view the designs and offer their feedback. The consultation is now open and will close on October 19.

Detailed plans of the scheme will be available to view in the windows of Shepshed Library and an additional information panel about Market Place will be displayed in the window of the former Complexions shop from Wednesday September 23 until the end of the consultation.

The Shepshed Town Centre Project forms part of the town’s masterplan which sets out how it could develop.

Charnwood Borugh Council says the scheme has been designed so work can be implemented in a phased approach, according to the level of resources available. The Council is hoping work will start in summer 2021. The proposed phasing and prioritisation of street works is as follows:

Market Place
Bull Ring
Hall Croft
Field Street
