Thousands line Castle Street for the Soap Box Derby

Speeds of up to 35pmh were recorded by some of the soap boxes.

Hinckley BID’s 11th Annual Soap Box Derby took place yesterday and the streets were packed with spectators.

25 teams entered the competition which sees teams race their handmade vehicles down Castle Street.

This year the competitors ranged from 12 to 70 years of age.

Toni Scott of Hinckley BID, said: "Once again the weather held out for our brave entrants to push their vehicles to the limit – our thanks to all who entered and to the many volunteers who assisted us".  

Speeds of up to 35pmh were recorded by some of the soap boxes in a battle for the time-trial prize.

The Dirty Truckers won the senior overall fastest team and the fastest driver on the day with a time of 21.1 seconds.

The junior overall prize went to YEP Leicester with their fastest run at 22.3 seconds.

BID Director Steve Wegerif, said: "Our thanks to all the businesses in Hinckley Town centre – their financial contribution to the BID enables these huge events to take place and allow us to showcase the very best of Hinckley".
