Charnwood Borough Council has launched a consultation over proposals to change the cost of its car parks in Loughborough.

The Council says its operating costs for the car parks have increased by 27 per cent and revenue has dropped by 15 per cent since 2019. They say electricity costs for the car parks over the past five years have more than doubled to over £90,000 a year.

The proposed changes include increasing an hour’s parking from 60p to £1 and for a full day from £6 to £7 at some locations. New charges are being proposed for evenings and Sundays.

The consultation has now opened and runs until 11:59pm on Sunday 20 October, 2024.

Cllr Liz Blackshaw, the Council’s lead member for parking, said: “We are proposing to make some changes to parking charges in Loughborough and have launched a consultation. We welcome people’s views and they will be considered before any final decision has been taken.”

Any surplus revenue from car parks goes towards services such as street cleaning, maintaining street furniture and tackling enviro crime like fly-tipping and so the borough council says that any drop in revenue means those services have to find funding from elsewhere or make cuts.

More information about the proposals and how to respond to the survey can be found on the Council website. Visit www.charnwood.gov.uk/parkingchargesconsultation2024.
